To everyone who doesn’t know where to start, I want to share how I got started.
During the pandemic, I had never run before. In fact, I had never considered myself particularly athletic. But the idea of having to stay indoors made me realize that I needed to move.
So I bought a treadmill and, one evening, I tried to run. “Run” may be a slightly generous word: I lasted three minutes. Three very short minutes!
And yet, I didn’t give up. I kept going, one step at a time, until running became a regular, consistent habit. Then, incredibly, I made it all the way to a marathon.
What a difference, right?
It’s amazing to discover what our bodies are capable of when we challenge them with patience, consistency, and in the right way. I never thought running could become a passion: I was convinced that sooner or later, I would give it up.
Instead, I still run today—and I’m proud of it.
Running makes me feel good, helps me stay fit, and gives me a space that is entirely my own. It doesn’t always have to be a competition, or a race against the clock for a personal best or first place. Sometimes, sport is simply about having fun and feeling good.
You don’t have to be fast. You don’t have to win. And you don’t even have to enter races.
Run because you enjoy it. Run because it’s your time with yourself. Run because it clears your mind.
If you don’t know where to start, step outside and walk or run around the block. If you enjoy it, keep going. You may surprise yourself with just how far you can go.
