Running seems simple: you tie your shoes and go. And yet, after more than six years and countless kilometres, I’ve realised that it is much more than just physical exercise.
Running is the most honest training ground I know. It has taught me that, just like when I study Japanese or face a difficult day, forcing things gets you nowhere. You need patience, and you need to listen to your own rhythm.
I’m not an elite athlete, but running allows me to work towards my goals — whether it’s a half marathon or the London Marathon — without losing sight of the joy of living.
The real finish line? It isn’t just the time on the clock, but everything I take with me along the way: consistency, my husband’s support and, of course, that ice-cold beer at the end of a session that puts everything back into perspective.
